Privacy policy

Paperfarer is an accountless research discovery and reading app. It does not operate advertising or analytics services and does not sell personal information.

Information on your device

Projects, saved papers, notes, reading progress, imported documents, and settings are stored on your device. Paperfarer has no account system and no Paperfarer cloud library.

Scholarly providers

When you request a search or access route, Paperfarer sends the necessary search text or scholarly identifier directly to OpenAlex, Crossref, Europe PMC, arXiv, a publisher, or the institutional resolver you selected. Those providers process requests under their own privacy policies.

Optional provider keys

OpenAlex and Zotero API keys are supplied by you, stored in the iOS Keychain as device-only items, and sent only to the corresponding provider. Zotero export sends bibliographic metadata, your note, Paperfarer's discovery rationale, and access provenance. It never sends the paper PDF.

Backups

Paperfarer can create a portable backup when you ask. It contains local app data and, only if you select that option, local documents. Provider credentials are never included. The destination selected through the iOS share sheet controls where your backup is stored.

Deletion

Erase Everything removes Paperfarer projects, papers, notes, settings, documents, caches, and stored provider credentials from the device. Removing the app also removes its sandboxed data, subject to device backups managed by Apple.
